Many veterans and their families do not know that there is a VA benefit that can help cover the cost of in-home care. The VA Aid and Attendance pension is a needs-based benefit available to wartime veterans with a non-service-connected disability, as well as their surviving spouses, who need help with daily living. 


Healthline works with the VetAssist Program to help eligible veterans and surviving spouses access this benefit and begin receiving care at home. We can start services right away while the VA processes the application so there is no gap in care.


What the Benefit Covers

Once approved the monthly VA pension helps cover in-home care services including personal hygiene, bathing, dressing, meal preparation, mobility support, light housekeeping and companionship. The goal is to help veterans and their spouses remain safely at home for as long as possible.

Who Qualifies

To be eligible for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit through the VetAssist Program the veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a wartime period and received an honorable discharge. The veteran must also have a medical need for assistance with daily activities. Financial eligibility is part of the assessment though ongoing care expenses are taken into account during that review.

The disability does not need to be related to military service to qualify.

  • What is the VetAssist Program and how does it work?

    VetAssist is a program that helps wartime veterans and their surviving spouses apply for the VA Aid and Attendance pension and begin receiving in-home care services. Healthline is a partner agency that provides the care. VetAssist is not a government agency and is not affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • Does my condition need to be service related to qualify?

    No. The VA Aid and Attendance pension is available to veterans with non-service-connected disabilities. You do not need to have been injured during service to be eligible.

  • Can the surviving spouse of a veteran qualify for in-home care through VetAssist?

    Yes. If you were married to a wartime veteran at the time of their death you may qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit and receive in-home care through the VetAssist Program. You must currently be single and must not have remarried after November 1, 1990.

  • How long does VA approval take and when does care start?

    VA processing can take several months. Through the VetAssist Program care can begin right away while the application is being reviewed so there is no delay in getting support at home.
