What Is Respite Care

Respite Care is a Missouri Medicaid funded service designed to give family caregivers temporary relief from the demands of caring for a loved one at home. Caring for a loved one full time is one of the hardest things a family can do. Respite Care exists so you do not have to do it alone every single day.


When a family member, friend or neighbor is the primary unpaid caregiver for someone with a chronic illness or disability, Respite Care allows a trained professional to step in so the caregiver can rest, attend to personal needs or simply take time to recharge.


The service is provided in the home by a caregiver from our agency. The person receiving care stays in the familiar comfort of their own environment while their primary caregiver takes the time they need.


What Respite Care Covers

During a Respite Care visit our caregiver provides supervision and personal support including assistance with daily activities, mobility, personal hygiene and companionship. The goal is to make sure the person receiving care is safe, comfortable and well attended to for the duration of the visit.

Who Qualifies

Respite Care is available through Missouri Medicaid for individuals enrolled in the Aged and Disabled Waiver program. Eligibility and the number of authorized hours are determined by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services based on the individual's care needs. The primary caregiver providing day to day support must be unpaid.
